FRIENDLY REMINDER [TO OBEY THE LAW]

Between the sirens blaring all day throughout Mendenhall Valley and the amounts of people getting pulled over by the Juneau Police Department, it’s safe to say that it’s that time of the month. No, not that time of the month, silly nilly. The time of the month where your local police are focusing on making their monthly quota of writing tickets.

Now, that doesn’t mean to try to be even more sneaky with what you do, that means that you should effectively remember to obey the law. The only way to not get pulled over is to drive safely. Well, some of us need a reminder to check out our vehicles and make sure they’re in working condition (headlights, taillights, brake lights) because you could be surprised when you have an excessive amount of cops show up just because you have a taillight out. Not good on the nerves if you ask me, and trust me when I say that you could definitely do without having to deal with that scenario!

And definitely make sure that what you’re driving is street legal. I get the fact that the new wheels you’ve got are super awesome, but does it have a DMV issued license plate? Are you driving the speed limit? Or are you speeding? Most of the way down Egan is 55 MPH and when it slows down it’s 40 MPH, and once you’re in downtown it slows all the way down to 20 MPH in order to keep our pedestrians safe (some are from out of town, so please impress them so that they want to come back because these cruise lines are investing a lot into this town) and if you go driving like a speed demon downtown, how’s that going to look on you personally? How are you going to feel when you’re pulled over and trying your best to talk your way out of getting a ticket? Been there, done that, not fun.

Please, keep in mind that Mendenhall Loop is 35 MPH once you’re driving past The Pipeline skatepark that’s inside the Jackie Renninger park, and once that turns into Glacier Highway, it’s an even slower speed of 30 MPH. It’s too easy to drive a little faster than the speed limit in most places due to keeping up with the flow of traffic, but if you get picked out of a crowd to be clocked at a ridiculous speed, you’ll be the one getting the ticket, and no one else.

Anyhow, please be safe for the rest of the summer and remember what I said about the speed limits if you want to avoid having to deal with fines and court appearances over the way you chose to drive. Doesn’t matter what you drive or who you are in this town, because cops are equal opportunity citation—writers no matter where you are and what you do.

Don’t believe me? Well then, did you hear about the North Las Vegas Police Chief that got pulled over for drunk driving? If not, you should probably check that out via internet searching. The Las Vegas Review Journal has the deets on that one.
